With my first baby I had more clogged ducts than I can count! Clogged ducts are terrible! So I experimented and researched how to prevent them. As time went on they became fewer and fewer and with my second baby, I have only had one; and it was very minor.
For those interested, I thought I would share some of the things I have done to prevent those pesky ducts this time!
- For the first couple of weeks postpartum, I wore a bra as sparingly as possible. Anytime I didn’t need to wear a bra, I didn’t. Or I would wear a night time nursing bra if I needed to have the breast pads.
- Once my milk was in and stable (2-3 weeks postpartum) I wore my bra like usual. But make sure you buy a good bra! I didn’t with my first and that was half my problem. I love the bravado. I bought mine on Amazon for $40. They are a little pricey, but so worth it!
- Wear loose fitting shirts. This is just great all around! It hides your postpartum belly, it is much easier for nursing, and it doesn’t put any pressure on your breasts. It’s a win, win, win.
- Don’t use a chest pack carrier at first. The only clogged duct I got with our second baby when I used our chest carrier. It put too much pressure on my breast. I use a Moby wrap at first. New babies like the Moby better anyway. Depending on how sensitive you are, you could try using the carrier after a couple of months. I am way too sensitive and just avoid it all together.
- The last piece of advice I have for you is, if you feel like you might be getting a clogged duct, nurse, nurse, nurse! Nurse on that side first, nurse frequently, take a warm shower and nurse again. Once your milk is in and nursing is established you should not have any pain in your breasts. If you do, you are probably getting a clogged duct.
